Obituary

Penn Yan – Robert “Gary” Hopkins, known also to friends and family as “Hoppy”, passed in his home on January 21, 2020 at the age of 88.

Born November 12, 1931, to the late Homer and Margaret Hopkins, Gary spent his adolescent years in Rochester, NY before moving to Penn Yan to establish his permanent home.

Gary was a non conformist who dedicated all of his adult years to seeking knowledge, sharing ideas and challenging societal norms. He enjoyed watching people’s reactions to his ideas and always had something to tell you that he wanted you to “think about.” He was no stranger to hard work and committed himself to doing just that, working hard and hustling every day.

Gary was a lifelong dog lover and avid outdoorsman. In his prime, he enjoyed hiking, fishing and raising a variety of animals including pigs, chickens and rabbits.

Gary was predeceased by his wife Nancy Ann Hopkins, brother, Russell Hopkins and grandson, Derek Wozniak.

He is survived by his loving sister, Linda (Hopkins) McIntee of Phoenix, AZ; three sons, Mark Hopkins (Noreen) of Delevan, NY, Alan Hopkins (Marilyn) of Indianapolis, IN and Tom Horn of Canandaigua, NY. He is also survived by his five granddaughters, Erin, Amy, Elaine, Emily and Allison; two nieces, Laura and Leslie; and three nephews, Lee, Scott and David.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Robert Hopkins’ name to Bernard’s Beagle Rescue, P.O. Box 1739, Cicero, NY 13039.
