Rushville- John W. Block, 89, died peacefully Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, at his home.
Friends may call Wednesday (Oct. 28th) from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Crosswinds Wesleyan Church, 3360 Middle Cheshire Rd., Canandaigua. A Memorial Service will follow at 3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Middlesex Valley Volunteer Ambulance, 817 Rte. 245, Middlesex, NY 14507.
John served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946. He was a teacher at Canandaigua Academy until his retirement in 1985. Active in local politics, John was a former Mayor of the Village of Rushville, and a former Trustee. He had been a Marcus Whitman School Board Member, and a member of the Rushville Lions Club.
John was a life member of the American Legion and a Life & Endowment member of the National Rifle Association. He loved hunting, fishing and boating. John spent 18 winters in Florida. He also spent summers at his Chamount Bay cottage.
John is survived by his wife of 29 years, Mary; two sons, Kurt (Debbie) Block and Eric Block; one grandson, Derek Block; five step-children, Lynn (Bill) Williams, Joan (Paul) Mitchell, John (Helen) Hobart, Lee Hobart and Bill (Pam) Hobart; 12 grandchildren, Stacy (Bill) Hughes, Oliver (Venise) Williams IV, Jennifer (Michael) DiSpigna, Dana (Elizabeth) Mitchell, David Hobart, Lonnie Gardner, Tammy (Rick) Brewer, Josh Hobart, Danielle Hobart, Ryan (Danielle) Hobart, Nathan Hobart and Matthew Hobart; and 12 great-grandchildren, Ashley and William Hughes, Victoria, Olivia and Oliver Williams V, Christian, Elizabeth and Laura DiSpigna, Patrick Mitchell, Mika Hobart, Beth Ann Coleates and Kaylee Hobart.
John was predeceased by his first wife, Lynne; one son, Thomas Block; daughter-in-law, Mary Beth Hobart; and grandson, Michael Hobart.
