Obituary

Hall- George E. Oswald, Jr., age 84,passed away on March 31, 2022 after a brief illness.

There will be no calling hours. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, (April 30th) at 1 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 514 East Swamp Rd., Penn Yan. Burial will follow in Shuman Cemetery, 649 East Swamp Road. All units, blue and gray, are welcome at the church and at the graveside.  A Celebration of Life will be follow at the Hall Fire Department at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the NY 148th Volunteer Infantry Company E, c/o P.O. Box 113, Hall, NY 14463.

George was born to George Oswald, Sr. and Pauline J. Moorehouse Oswald at home in the Town of Benton on July 9, 1937. He was active in sports, playing baseball, soccer and basketball, and graduated in 1955 from Gorham High School. In 2019, the 1954 Gorham Baseball team, that George was a member of, was inducted into the Marcus Whitman Athletic Hall of Fame.

George was drafted into the service. After being discharged from the Army’s  Big Red I in Ft. Riley, Kansas, he married Carol Schoen in Plymouth, Nebraska. They returned to reside in Hall. Upon his return, he was rehired at Robson Seed Farm, where Orson Robson taught George the skills for sweet corn breeding. George worked at Robsons for a number of years, then went to Seedway in Hall for 18 years as their sweet corn breeder.

In 1986 Crookham Company of Caldwell, Idaho hired George to run their Northeast Sweet Corn Research Center, until he retired in 2012. George produced many marketed hybrid sweet corn varieties for over 50 years. He was an active member and speaker for the International Corn Development Association.

George acted for 36 years as a Boy Scout Commissioner for the Seneca  Waters District, and was the recipient of the coveted Lamb Award, for his service to the scouts. George was also a former member of the Hall Volunteer Fire Department.

Since 1978, George had been an active member of the Civil War Re-enactment community, as a direct descendent with the NY 148th Volunteer Infantry Company E, and a 35 year member of the Sons of the Veterans Reserve Camp #146. He was an avid history buff, hunter and fisher.

For 58 years he was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Geneva, acting as a Council President and Elder for many terms.

George is survived by his wife, Carol; daughter, Starlet Bostwick of Hall; brother Gilbert (Mary) Oswald of Penn Yan; sister, Cheryl Field of Rushville and sister, Sandra (Donald) Knopf of Canandaigua; nephews, Gary and Kirby Field; and niece, Christy Knopf.
