Obituary
Canandaigua – Eugene V. Bell, 90, died Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at his home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday (Oct. 6th) at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Canandaigua.
Burial will be in the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Here was a guy who had it all. A devoted wife of 66 years, . Theirs was a love match from the start. Three brilliant children by birth, Christopher, Lisa and Sandy. His son of the heart, Joe All four were crazy about him and he was crazy about them. Their spouses were too, Serge, Susannah and Mary. And of course, the grandkids, Jerry, Tracy, Ben and Drew. All four are doing their grandfather proud. A devoted son, brother, son-in-law, uncle and friend, he loved more than words can express – his parents, his siblings, Mamie and Margie, Mary Ellen and George, Frankie and Barbara, Stella, Norma and Eli, Dianne and Frank.
Eugene Vincent Bell was born May 1, 1927 in New York City, the youngest of five to Joseph and Mary Bell. His family attended St. Jude’s Parish where he served as head altar boy. In school, he studied to be a draftsman and in WWII he served in the US Navy aboard the USS Benewah. He was so proud of his service. In fact, his snazzy uniform was what attracted Virginia Collins when they first met. Of course, it was everything else about him that made her fall in love for a lifetime.
After the war, he worked for Rolls Royce and Mercedes Benz in , then Imported Motors in Montclair, New Jersey. Gene was a car guy – specifically a high-end car guy. He knew his stuff. He was an engineer at heart and a jack of all trades. Builder, craftsman, inventor, fine-tuner. He was a mighty fine fisherman and photographer too.
With all that said, his real focus was family. They lived together in New York, Paramus, Ringwood, New Jersey and finally Canandaigua, NY. It’s no exaggeration that everyone agrees amongst his best qualities were his loyalty and moral compass.
As he said of himself and his family, “we’ve been so lucky.” Eugene Bell, you are very loved and you will be very missed.
