Obituary
Geneva- Dortha H. Nester, age 84, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2018 after a short illness.
Dortha was born June 25, 1934 in Geneva, NY. She was the daughter of the late Floyd Holland and Geraldine David Holland. Dortha graduated from Geneva High School in 1952 and SUNY Geneseo in 1956 to pursue a career in education. During her over 30-year-long career, she taught elementary school students in Angelica, NY, the West Street School in Geneva, and at Penn Yan Central School District, from where she retired in 1990.
Dortha married Alan Nester on March 29, 1958 in Geneva, NY. They were members of the Penn Yan United Methodist Church for over 40 years before joining the Geneva First United Methodist Church.
Dortha was an active member of the Kashong Point community on Seneca Lake, where she shared nearly 75 summers with her family and friends. She was an avid knitter, reader, and traveler. Alan and she spent many winters together in Florida during their retirement; they volunteered for several years at Highlands Hammock State Park in Sebring, Florida, and spent their last winters together at their home in Bradenton, Florida.
Dortha is survived by her husband of 60 years, Alan Nester; their three children, Debra Baker, David (Lisa) Nester, and Darlene Latten; and her sister, Sandra Maslyn. She was ‘Nana’ to five grandchildren, Ryan (Erin) Baker, Eric (Carolyn) Baker, Daniel Nester, Margaret Nester (Ben Spencer), and Bethany Latten; and three great-grandchildren, Daniel, Matthew, and Zoey. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Mandy.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to memorial funds of either the Geneva First United Methodist Church, 340 Main St., Geneva, NY 14456, or the Geneva Public Library, 244 Main St., Geneva, NY 14456.
