Obituary
Hopewell- Doris B. Eldredge received her Heavenly Reward on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at her home.
Friends may call Monday (March 20th) from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Kenneth J. Perkins Funeral in Gorham. A Funeral Service will follow at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Sand Hill Cemetery, Town of Seneca.
Per Doris’ request, donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Happy Tails Humane Society, Co. Rd. #46, Canandaigua, NY 14424.
Doris graduated from the Seneca-Gorham-Potter Central School District in 1936, from the N.Y.S. Teachers College at Brockport in 1939, and received her B.S. from SUNY Geneseo in 1964.
Doris began her teaching career at Seneca No. 9 rural school. She later taught in the Gorham School District and then in the Phelps School District. She retired from Phelps, after an accumulated 34 ½ years of teaching. Doris was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorarium for female educators, and also the American Association for University Women. Doris was a member of the Phelps-Clifton Retired Teachers Association, the Ontario County Retired Teachers Association, and the N.Y.S. Retired Teacher Association.
Mrs. Eldredge was active in her community. She was a member of the Seneca Castle United Methodist Church, the Republican Women’s Club, the Granger Homestead Society, the Friends of Sonnenberg, and both the Hopewell and Ontario County Historical Societies. Doris had also served on the Ontario County Republican Committee, and had volunteered at Gleaners’ Kitchen and with Literacy Volunteers.
Doris enjoyed traveling. She attended both the 1939 World’s Fair and Expo 67 in Montreal. She traveled extensively in North America and toured Europe. One of her fondest memories of Europe was receiving Communion at Westminster Abbey.
Doris is survived by her sons, Carl (Brenda) Eldredge, David (Candice) Eldredge and Steven (Judy) Eldredge; ten grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brother-in-law, Francis Eldredge; and very special friend, Pat Gregory.
Doris was the daughter of the late Harry and Laura Bird. Doris was predeceased by her husband, Thomas; sister, Lillian Gardner, daughter-in-law, Lisa Eldredge; and grandsons, Dana Eldredge and Stevie Eldredge.
