Obituary
Canandaigua- Donald F. Barnes passed away on May 4, 2016, at the age of 78, after a long illness.
Friends may call Friday (May 6th) from 1 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kenneth J. Perkins Funeral Home in Gorham, NY. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday (May 7th) at 11 a.m. at the Gorham Fire Dept., 4676 Kearney Rd., Gorham, NY. Burial services will follow at Overackers Cemetery, Middlesex, NY.
Donations may be made to the NY State Firefighters Memorial, c/o County Fire Coordinators Association of the State of New York, 85 Industrial Tract, Hudson, NY 12534; or the Finger Lakes Regional Burn Association, 307 Packetts Landing, Fairport, NY 14450.
Donald was born in Cortland, NY and moved to Canandaigua in his teenage years. He graduated from Middlesex Valley Central School in 1955.Don’s entire career was dedicated to serving the people of Ontario County as the Director of Emergency Management Services for 32-years. Some of his notable accomplishments include creating the County’s first 911 center and the Stop DWI Program. He was also a driving force in developing the Ontario County Safety Training Facility to ensure the Fire and EMS services had the best training available. Don was also a 58-year member of the Crystal Beach Fire Department.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Lorraine. Also survived by two sons, Todd Barnes, Bloomfield, NY, (Roxanne), Stanley, NY and Jeff (Gwen) Barnes, Apex, NC; four grandchildren, Taylor, Hannah, Griffin, and Evan; two cousins, Nancy Cute and George Mason; brother-in-law, Charles (Chip) Green; brother, Alan (Lonnie) Barnes and several nieces and nephews.
