Nancy was a lovely lady and an affectionate wife, mother, daughter, granddaughter, sister, and friend. Her capable hands, warm heart and friendly manner influenced the course of many lives. Nancy was a sweet lady whose gifts were used to care for people, animals and everything within her reach. Her motto and goal was to leave all those with whom she spent time in better condition than when she arrived no matter how short the duration of time she had to accomplish her goal.

Nancy Lou was born to Charlotte Brown Therminy and Henry Therminy on March 13, 1933. She lived in the town of Ormsby, PA. where she resided with her parents until their divorce, afterwards she lived in Duke Center, PA.  where she resided with her adoptive parents  Aunt Mable Brown Curtis and Uncle Tom Curtis. Nancy’s adoptive parents supported all of Nancy’s endeavors and continued to play a life long roll. Tom and Mable Curtis included Nancy and her family and grandchildren in all of their family events as did their children Richard, Florence and Freada.  Nancy graduated from Allegheny High School in Allegheny N.Y. and later graduated from Edward Meyer Memorial Hospital in Buffalo N.Y.  Nancy received an RN in nursing and worked as a nurse at Edward Meyer Memorial Hospital until the birth of the couples first child. She then worked at Thompson Health on Three East in the children’s wing. During her work at the Hospital she was loved by the staff and patients alike. Nancy later worked as a school nurse for the Marcus Whitman Central School District where she was located at the Middlesex Elementary School.  She is remembered by all as outgoing, helpful, kind and fun loving. In addition to her career, she was the band treasurer, she frequently volunteered to sew uniforms, capes, and  traveled  with the band and color guard  as the nurse. Nancy also had a Girl Scout troop and delighted in taking her girls camping and on many adventures. The girls that participated in her troop remember her fondly, many still reach out to say hello and to thank her for her time and efforts on their behalf.

Nancy attended the United Methodist Church in Aloquin where she taught Sunday school, taught classes at summer bible school, sang in the choir, volunteered at the church bizarre, church suppers, cleaned the church with her husband Walter and was the church and Sunday school’s treasurer. Nancy created beautiful flower gardens and was an avid vegetable gardener. In addition she planted, tended and harvested raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, grapes, elderberries, apples, pears, plums and peaches. Nancy also enjoyed canning, cooking and baking. Her freezer was filled with cookies, homemade Texas Sheet Cake and a variety of pies which she had on hand to share with visitors.

Nancy was married in January of 1960 to Walter L Brown, who survives. The couple has five children, Kimberly (Joseph) Benson, Elizabeth Joseph, Walter (Maurien) Brown, Jr., Warren (Rob) Hermanet-Brown and Willard (Janet) Brown; and ten grandchildren, Jennifer, Sarah, Caleb, Joel, Abigail, Gabriella, Dante, Cedar, Bruno, and Thais; and four great-grandchildren, Sofia, Heitor, Laura and Helena. She will be fondly remembered and dearly missed.

Mom, Aunt, Wife, Sister, Cousin, Grandmother, Niece, Daughter, Daughter in Law, Nurse, Friend, Neighbor, Scout leader, Homemaker, Seamstress, Costume Designer, Choir Member, Sunday School Teacher, Care Giver, Gardener, Animal Lover, Adventure Traveler, Survivor, Fighter, Peacemaker, Philosopher, and a Hero…

She was many things to many people much of which I will never know but this is what I do know…

She was born in 1933, it was the height of the great depression and yes, they were hard times. Ormsby, Pennsylvania in McKean County was no exception. Opportunities were scarce then and perhaps now as well. Case Cutlery, Zippo Lighters, and Costa’s Store were there, the remnants of the oil and gas industry were there, farming was hard but in general there are always excuses for not living up to expectations and obligations. All the same, the environment we grow up in certainly has a marked impact on who we are and the way we see the world. Hard times cause people to be very careful in their habits, behavior and choices – my mother was a careful person.

Her early life was something she never talked about, ask my father or Freda if you want to hear an inspirational story that will shock you. Summarizing the tale, she was abandoned by both her mother and her father at the age of 13. Two years later, she came live with Mable Curtis, her mother’s sister, and family who became everything her own parents were not. In this way, she came to have a real family and we came to have grandparents with the last name of Curtis.

Tom and Mabel Curtis passed away a little more than 15 years ago and my mother greatly missed them. They loved her the way every child deserves to be loved.

It was through Mable and Tom that she found a partner to build a life with and got busy living, this was a characteristic of her generation. She didn’t waste a lot of time rehashing the past, God knows she had more than sufficient reason to be angry and bitter. With her husband she raised five kids, built a home and a reputation for being gentle, considerate, forgiving, collaborative and unassuming.

She was not a person who rejoiced in cruelty or control, she was not a gossiper, she was a doer and a quiet one. She didn’t seek recognition or compensation for her contributions. She was the kind of person who would loan you money to chase your dreams or dig yourself out of a hole.

She was adventurous and traveled to Germany less than 10 years after the end of WWII.
She was elegant and always dressed and behaved with dignity.
She was modest and understated, she boasted about others successes but never her own.
She was ethical and always gave the benefit of the doubt to others.
She was delicate and sensitive, she suffered injustices and moved on and didn’t become callous.
She was forgiving and always expected people to behave better than history would predict.
She was fun loving and enjoyed annual excursions to the family camp in Alleghany Forest.
She was a fighter, she was afflicted with Lyme’s disease, a bladder condition, and Parkinson’s. She didn’t let any of them stop her. She maintained a full life until the AVC’s wouldn’t allow it any longer. She gardened after she could barely stand, cooked and cleaned when her hands barely worked. She did it because it was her calling to serve, to beautify, to care and so she soldiered on. She fought back from several episodes which were expected to take her over the year that she was hospitalized. She survived COVID too. She never showed her fear, as a nurse she understood all too well what all the diagnosis meant

Without a philosophy of life transformed into actions and attitudes, no one is so consistent.

She was entirely about being straight and good, every single thought and action confirmed. Some people say they love you, she made it clear with her life…

She was certainly the hero of her own story and at various times in life she was the hero of many other people’s stories as well..

Love,
Bud [Son]
